Diversity distraction
Many employers are failing their disabled employees to concentrate instead on diversity, according to results from the Employers' Disability Standard 2007 survey.
The research revealed that disability specific goals are suffering because of general diversity policy.
Employers Forum on Disability chief executive Susan Scott-Parker says: “The Disability Standard shows that too often employers approach the concept of diversity, rather than concentrating on becoming disability confident.
“There is little evidence that diversity branded messages encourage commitment to disability equality.
“We believe that the diversity ‘brand’ is proving in many cases to be a distraction, preventing employers from taking specific disability related actions and causing disabled people to lose out at work.”
