The government starts to consult on disability employment

The government has started a series of public consultation events on its recent report, ‘Helping people achieve their full potential; improving specialist disability employment services.’

The consultation document contains proposals to reform disability employment services that help disabled people who have complex issues to find, retain and progress in work. These include the Job Introduction Scheme, Work Preparation, WORKSTEP, Access to Work and the role of disability employment advisers in Jobcentre Plus.

Anne McGuire, minister for disabled people, says: "People in work are generally better off financially, as well as in terms of their health, wellbeing and self-esteem. It is important that disabled people get the same opportunities to benefit from work as everyone else.

"But we believe that if we are to achieve our ambition of helping more disabled people lead fulfilling lives, we must improve our existing specialist employment services so that they are better placed to help disabled people to get into work and progress at work. I would encourage anyone with an interest to share their views with us."
