CIPP backs call for evidence on tax/NIC alignment consultation

The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) supports a call for evidence from the government as the first phase of consultation to the integration of tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) is announced.

CIPP says the ‘alignment’ of tax and NICs first announced in the Budget in March was never going to be a realistic option as both areas are too complex to fully align so the change of title to integration is far more appropriate and not as misleading.

Karen Thomson, associate director of policy, research and strategic visibility, says: “We thoroughly welcome this news from the government and we appreciate that payroll professionals have enough on their plate to deal with, however it is vital that the CIPP policy team gain a fuller understanding of how this is going to impact them in the workplace.

“We hope members use this opportunity to tell us their concerns so that as always, we can work with government on their behalf.”

Formal consultation on the reform options takes place in the autumn but the government wants to hear the evidence on the impact of current systems.

The CIPP policy team will publish a survey for members to provide their views on areas such as software, issues and errors, interaction with other reforms and the impact upon payroll professionals. More details can be found online at www.cipp.org.uk.
