CareerBuilder commits to mobile future

Online jobsite CareerBuilder UK is launching a free jobs app for the iPhone which allows jobseekers to search and apply for a job on the move and also makes use of the phone’s built-in geolocation technology to deliver jobs in a particular location.

“A jobseeker could be walking down a high street and searching for jobs at a retail store on that street,” explained CareerBuilder UK managing director Tony Roy, who added: “Companies like ours are looking for ways of matching jobseekers to employers at every opportunity. iPhone users are loyal and active and I believe mobile technology will continue to grow and the way people use their phones will continue to expand. We are really only scratching the surface.”

The ’Jobs by CB’ application allows jobseekers to create a user account, upload a CV or create a new one and search for jobs by keyword, location or company. They can also search for jobs by company name, employment type, such as full-time, intern, contractor, and radius, specifying a maximum desired distance from a specific location. Jobseekers can also apply for jobs from directly within the application.

Roy said the mobile’s user experience should be consistent with what they’re used to on their PCs or laptops. “For us the challenge was the same as when launching any new website in any country: to make sure the experience is localised and there is consistency of brand,” he said.

While CareerBuilder’s iPhone app is significant in demonstrating another major player’s commitment to mobile jobseeking, future features to its main site are likely to bring new levels of transparency to the jobseeking process for candidates. hireINSIDER, which has launched in the US, allows candidates to see how they compare to others who have applied for the same job through CareerBuilder.

The site generates a job competition report comparison, which is based on a number of metrics such as education, experience, average current salaries, languages spoken and employment status.

Applicants’ privacy is protected and jobseekers can also sign up for a free hiring status report. No date for the UK arrival of this feature is set but Roy told

Recruiter it would be over the coming months.
