UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy discussed the European draft directive on agency workers during Sarkozy's recent visit, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.

Tom Hadley, the REC's director of external relations, told Recruiter: "The French president made some very complimentary noises about the UK's labour market."

On reports that the PM was in secret talks with the EU over the directive, Hadley said: "Ultimately, the aim must be to ensure that any directive includes sufficient flexibility to be workable in the UK."
