Assume everyone is an angel
Try this. Assume that the intent of your colleagues is good. Most often you’ll be proved right. If you assume positivity, life is Technicolor. If you look for crap, that’s what you’ll find.
We all need a break, a reminder about how fabulous we are. When someone naturally assumes that we are shiny, bright and fantastic, that’s what we go back to: our original state.
We are easily warped in the moment, but our true nature is to have fun. See that in all and that’s what will show up in every experience you have. In effect it creates your reality.
Every interaction is a chance for you to see the sparkle, the Elvis in others. Knowing all their variety of behaviour makes life a richer experience; everything that angers you can also help you learn.
Watch people who are stuck, send them love. When they send you bad things, enjoy the hilarity. When you can’t understand how this could be good, laugh.
Assume positivity and feel your liberation begin. We all get people asking for career help. It may be an overt ‘give me a job’ meeting, or something more tangential, but if you are into people it naturally happens.
My brother Mark is a founding partner in Weapon 7, a London-based integrated marketing agency, so he gets approached for a ‘little chat’ all the time. He tries to see everyone who asks to see him, even if for an hour over a coffee. People have told him this is a waste of time and shouldn’t be a priority, even when he makes it one. But Mark believes that anyone could have what it takes, regardless of their CV and experience; and if they don’t fit now they could at least grease the wheels for his company in the future. After all, nice brings nice…
One man, Tom, was so impressive that Mark promised to employ him as soon as a vacancy arose. The very next day one of his team resigned. Tom was immediately offered the post and they were working together within five weeks.
If Mark hadn’t assumed everyone is an angel he never would have discovered the huge talent that is Tom.
