Working mums site may upset the dads
Nearly 2,000 returning mothers and more than 300 employers have registered on a job site aimed at matching mums with "challenging, quality, yet flexible" jobs, according to the site's founders.
Nearly 2,000 returning mothers and more than 300 employers have registered on a job site aimed at matching mums with "challenging, quality, yet flexible" jobs, according to the site's founders.
However, an employment law specialist has warned the name, www.workingmums.co.uk, may prove troublesome for the site's creators at it may convince returning dads they are not welcome to apply for work using the system.
Trevor Bettany, partner at City law firm Speechly Bircham, told Recruiter: "It is not unlawful to target and use the term 'working mums' - but it could become a hostage to fortune.
"A man who was not accepted, or whose application was not given the same consideration as that of a woman could argue that the name and title 'Working Mums' suggests a discriminatory attitude, which is sufficient to pass the burden of proof to the employment agency or employer to show that his application failed for some reason other than his gender.
"It might be better to change the name so it is not giving the impression of applying only to 'mums', or at least make it clear that the applications of men are just as welcome and will be supported," Bettany said.
Website founder Gillian Nissim told Recruiter that despite the site's name, fathers seeking new jobs after staying at home with children were welcome to enrol. She said she was aware that some, in fact, already had.
