Telecommunications firm Vodafone has announced it will open a new technology lab and incubation centre in London’s Tech City, offering advice and support to entrepreneurs, as one of several boosts to the UK information and communications technology (ICT) industry being announced today.

Italian incubator Morning Boost should also create around 50 jobs when it opens its centre in Tech City this month, and is backed by £5m from Italian investors. These announcements will be made at today’s UK ICT summit, which includes speeches from Chancellor George Osborne, BBC director general Mark Thompson and BT chief executive Ian Livingston. This is one of 18 summits organised by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and follows yesterday's life sciences event.

The projects are not confined to London, with US mobile device management software provider AirWatch, which moved into Milton Keynes offices last year, expected to create 75 extra jobs in the next two years.

Other companies making announcements are bank Barclays, Japanese gaming firm GREE, payment and e-commerce firm MPP Global Solutions, software firm Sophia Search, education and learning technology company Tribal Group and digital design firm USTWO.

Chancellor Osborne says: “London 2012 is the perfect stage to show investors and entrepreneurs how much we have already achieved, and the exciting potential of what is to come. We are also proud to demonstrate the world-class innovation of the British tech industry, which is helping to deliver the most digitally-advanced Games in history.”
