Workers get chance to try new career

Had enough of recruitment or wish you could do more to help candidates find their dream career? An American company called Vocation Vacations is now offering disillusioned workers the chance to try out a new career without giving up the security of their current job.

The company organises a few days’ work in a their chosen field – which can be anything from cheesemaking to wedding planning – as well as a session with an experienced career coach to help them decide whether it’s the job for them.

The company’s founder Brian Kurth came up with the idea when he was stuck in traffic on his way to an unfulfilling job. So far the most popular choices have been a brewmaster apprenticeship, and running a bed-and-breakfast hotel.

But you’ll have to pay for the privilege, with prices starting at just over £250. The company plans to expand into the UK and Europe in early 2005.
