US Jobs and overseas competition key election topics

Job creation is proving to be a major talking point in the presidential race in the United States.

John Edwards and John Kerry, who are competing to be the Democrat party's candidate in next year's elections, are both concerned about the "jobless recovery" in the US.

It's been claimed that part of the reason for the lack of job creation in the country is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The FT reports that the agreement has allowed unskilled jobs to relocate to Mexico and as many as 100,000 jobs, mainly low-skilled, have moved south of the border.

Latest polls suggest that nine out 10 Americans believe jobs and foreign competition will be key topics in the election.
