Our casting call reaps results

Two recruiters will be seen offering their expert advice to employers on an Apprentice-style TV show after answering a casting call published in Recruiter.

Readers Rod Cornwell, an operating director at Thomas International, and Sam Landes, managing director of Career Works, star in Selling Yourself, a show designed to help employers to find the best candidate for vacant positions.

As part of the a six-part series, the duo recruit a wedding planner, an estate agent, a resort team manager, a restaurant manager, a car salesman and an account executive for an advertising agency.

The candidates give a 60-second pitch and are then whittled down through a group test, fast-turnaround presentations and finally, an hour-long interview.

Cornwell and Landes got the idea to appear on the show after reading the 29 June issue of Recruiter.

Landes, who has worked in recruitment since 1988, says she learned from her TV experience.

“A lot of the candidates hammed it up for the cameras, but that didn't last very long,” she said. “The experience eventually told me that I had to keep an open mind and be objective. You shouldn't make snap decisions about a candidate.”

Cornwell is a specialist in behavioural assessments and psychometric tests with Thomas International. But even he was stunned by one candidate's revelation.

“One girl being interviewed for the estate agent role said: 'I'm an honest person, so I'm probably not what you're looking for!',” he said.

The show starts on Tuesday, 14 February on Five.
