Psyched out

Recruiters use psychometrics more than ever

More firms are now using more recruitment assessment tools – and more often. So claims the latest research from high street agency Reed.

The survey of 250 HR professionals and 8,000 candidates discovered that presentations, psychometric tests and competency-based assessments were the most popular methods of assessing people.

More than half of respondents said they used assessment tools more than they did three years ago, suggesting an upsurge in formal testing. Respondents said that, as more people fought for fewer jobs, assessment tools helped them select the best candidates.

Candidates also appear to like the tests. Reed found that one-third of candidates believed assessments made them feel better about the organisation for which they were applying to work.

However, research firm Croner warned that employers could be risking discrimination claims if they used aptitude tests carelessly.
