The public relations sector must gain a greater sense of its own worth if it is to combat its candidate shortage, according to Patrick Barrow, director general of the Public Relations Consultant Association.

He said recent statistics show that 20% of those working in PR want to leave it within 10 years and 50% want to leave within five years.

Speaking at a debate organised by recruiter PR Moves, Barrow said: "If we're not careful we'll end up with an industry peopled by graduates and older people." There is a shortage of PR account directors, he said.

The PR Moves event, one of many organised by the company, aims to help it keep in contact with its candidates and help them keep up to date with changes in the industry.
