Migrating south

More people escaping city living

More and more people are following in the footsteps of Tom and Barbara Good, who quit city life for the greenery of the suburbs in the hit 1970s comedy series The Good Life.

The Goods famously turned their Surbiton home into a self-sufficient allotment where they grew all their own food and kept a number of farmyard animals.

The most recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics reveal that almost 263,000 people moved out of London in the year leading up to June 2003. Over the same period only 153,000 moved in, according to the ONS.

The region that attracted the most people outside of the capital was the south-west, with almost 33,000 moving in. Overall, England saw a net migration fall of more than 22,000.
