McJob listing sparks battle

Burger chain claims term is a slap in the face

We’ve all done one at some point in our careers. Now the concept of a ‘McJob’ – usually badly paid and low on the list of career aspirations – has been immortalised forever with its entry into Webster’s English Dictionary.

The dictionary defines a McJob as “a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement”.

But McDonald’s, the burger chain which inspired the term, is outraged by the definition. The company has sent an open letter to US newspapers saying the description is “a slap in the face” for the 12 million men and women who work in the restaurant industry.

There is even a suggestion that the company may sue. Webster’s stands by its definition.
