London hopes for double win

Key week for Crossrail and Olympics

Crossrail – the proposed £10bn railway link between west London, the City and east London – could get the go-ahead this month when a bill for the transport plan goes before Parliament.

The link could open up 15,000 engineering, design and maintenance vacancies to rail and engineering recruiters, Crossrail estimates.

A report released by The Mail on Sunday suggested the bill would be approved when it goes before Parliament this week and that the Treasury would allocate £7.5bn to the project. Private backers will provide the rest of the money.

Saul Philpot, managing director of recruitment firm Shorterm Rail, welcomed the prospect of Crossrail gaining approval. “It means more jobs for the industry,” he told Recruiter. “The contractors who are part of it will always need to top up their requirements with agency staff.”

The Crossrail project was initially proposed three years ago and garnered wide support from the government and businesses, but had since stalled due to arguments over how it should be funded.

•Another potential boost for the London job market came closer to becoming reality last week, when the International Olympic Committee visited the capital in its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. If the bid is successful, it could create 12,000 jobs and much work for agencies.
