Igen pioneers careers initiative
A scheme has been launched to provide careers advice specifically for young people from the travelling community, the first of its kind in Yorkshire.
The move, which is pioneered by Igen, the Leeds-based supplier of career services, is being led by the son of a fairground showman, Charles Birch.
“A key part of my job is to help school leavers get to where they want to be both socially and career-wise. If there are issues holding them back I can put them in touch with services that can help them,” said Birch. “My background helps young people overcome their cynicism towards institutions.”
Young people from travelling families often miss out on a formal education. According to an Ofsted report in 2003, up to 12,000 traveller children of secondary age are not registered at school.
Only one in five continue in education beyond 16.
