Higgs' recommendations ignored

Old boys network criticised

UK firms are failing to broaden the way they recruit non-executive directors, in spite of pressure from the Higgs Review recommendations.

Research from Ernst & Young and exec-appointments.com claims almost two-thirds (64%) of non-execs found their most recent posts through personal contacts.

Higgs challenged firms to use other means to recruit their non-executive directors to break the pattern of cosy old boys’ networks.

While companies applauded the idea, it appears they have done little in practice to implement it.

One survey respondent said that while Higgs had prompted more appreciation of a non-exec’s role, “there is little evidence of new blood being sought”.

In a separate development, a new organisation has launched with the aim of getting more women appointed as executive and non-executive directors.

The Register of Executive and Non Executive Women (RENEW) aims to encourage women to put themselves forward as candidates for boardroom roles.
