Gangmasters on trial
Jurors at Preston Crown Court have been shown footage of the rescue of a Chinese cockle picker from the night that more than 20 people died at Morecambe Bay.
The victims were part of a team caught by the incoming tide off Hest Bank on 5 February 2004.
Lin Liang Ren, from Liverpool, denies 21 counts of manslaughter and perverting the course of justice and conspiracy to facilitate illegal immigration.
Zhao Xiao Qing, 20, from Liverpool, denies perverting the course of justice and facilitating illegal immigration.
Lin Mu Yong, 31, from Liverpool, a cousin of Lin Liang Ren, denies an immigration offence.
Father and son David Anthony Eden Snr, 62, from Irby, Merseyside, and David Anthony Eden Jnr, 34, from Prenton, Merseyside, also deny immigration charges.
Following the tragedy, a bill designed to tackle illegal gangmasters, who control groups of unskilled workers, has become law.
The Gangmasters Licensing Act has been given Royal Assent and it is hoped the legislation will prevent abuses including slave wages and charging labourers for any safety equipment and accommodation.
The trial into the Morecambe Bay tragedy, which is expected to last between four and six months, continues.
