Professionals in the food industry say career progression is the most important factor in deciding to apply for a job, according a survey by Leading Edge, IGD’s the development and networking forum for managers in the food and grocery industry.
It found that 46% of professionals rate career progression as the main reason for applying for jobs, above other factors such as challenging work, training and development opportunities or an effective graduate programme.
Over three quarters of respondents say that opportunities for career progression will encourage them to stay with their current employer, ranking above feeling appreciated (72%) and money and perks (67%).
Leading Edge business development manager Shanna Ritchie says the results reflect improved perceptions of career opportunities in the food and grocery industry. “The rapid pace of change and growth in the industry in the past few years provides previously unthought-of career opportunities.
“The old perception that jobs in food and grocery are simply about stocking shelves is dying rapidly, as the UK’s best and brightest minds are attracted by the opportunities to progress,” she says.
