Employers and staff have different goals

Study finds differences include measuring success and motivation

There is a large gap between how individuals and their organisations judge success, according to research from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

In a study it found that employers and individuals are not aiming for the same goals - a problem if UK organisations are to be competitive in a global economy.

The CMI study found that 48% of executives judge success by the extent to which they develop their team members, but 38% believe that their organisation prioritises skills development.

It found that for 25% of executives achieving a flexible lifestyle is a measure of success, yet the same respondents claim that their organisations view things differently, with less than one in 10 suggesting their employer values work-life balance.

The research found that having a 'sense of purpose' and 'making a difference to society' ranked highly as a motivator for individuals, but many felt their organisations were more concerned with image and 'public recognition'.
