Employer brands are boss in China

Conference examines recruitment issues in China

Today's Chinese worker is "very ambitious" and wants to work for a market-leading company that has a clear vision of its long-term strategy, says the chief executive of a Cambridge firm that specialises in helping UK businesses develop their presence in China.

To attract such candidates, Ting Zhang of China Business Solutions advises companies planning to recruit in that country to include as much information as possible about employers' vision for the future in recruitment adverts.

Speaking at a conference in Cambridge Thursday, Zhang also urged recruiters to spend time developing job titles for specific roles that will appeal to status-conscious Chinese. The word "manager" must be part of the title in order to appeal to graduates. For instance, Zhang told the audience, the title "project manager" is usually an entry job for Chinese graduates, in contrast to the UK, where the title may well signify someone very senior.
