A North-East health authority is compiling a dictionary of local health-related phrases to help recruits from outside the region better understand their patients.
Easington Primary Healthcare Trust in County Durham has been consulting local people on the words or sayings that may baffle doctors from overseas or other parts of the UK.
Heed, gob, neif and kite are just some of the words people in the area use to describe various parts of the body. These and others will feature in a dialect guide as part of a new five-year recruitment plan.
The move follows a similar scheme in Yorkshire, where a similar guide was drawn up to help foreign doctors.
