Dangers in using agency drivers
Using agency drivers can sometimes lead to more accidents, claims a road safety training and research company.
West Yorkshire-based Interactive Driving Systems has updated and re-issued its best practice guide for managing agency drivers, aimed at raising awareness of issues and problems in the sector.
Research director Dr Will Murray said: “Despite improvements, both anecdotes and data also continues to suggest there’s still a problem in 2006. In one large company we work with, 35 out of their 54 biggest accidents in the past year involved agency drivers, which cost it £1.1m.”
The advice for recruiters includes getting applicants to provide positive identification, checking licences for endorsements, obtaining two references, having candidates take and pass assessments of skills, appearance, legislation knowledge and vehicle skills.
“The way forward is for the users and suppliers of agency drivers and the bodies that regulate them to acknowledge their responsibilities and take ownership of the situation through partnership and good management,” Murray added.
