Sub-zero staff now in demand

Are you a tradeswoman with a passion for penguins, seals and icebergs who’s prepared to work in freezing -40˚C temperatures?

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has just the job for you.

The organisation is looking for female electricians, plumbers, carpenters, steelworkers, chefs and boat-handlers to work at its five research stations on the world’s coldest continent.

Postings last for six to 18 months and the starting salary is £18,338, with all food, accommodation and travel paid for.

More women are getting into the trades and BAS wants to tap into that market, Reuters has reported.

Head of building services Jill Thomson said: “This is a tremendous chance for women with a sense of adventure to try something completely different. Where else can you climb down a crevasse in your lunch hour?”
