Carer shortage prompts hiring of Poles

Birmingham care firm forced to recruit Polish staff because of UK shortfall

Challenging recruitment conditions in the homecare sector have led to Birmingham-based care firm Claimar Care recruiting Polish staff.

The company, which provides care services for the elderly, has taken on four Polish workers and plans for 30 more in the coming months. It says recruiting quality care staff to meet demand in the UK is proving difficult.

Claimar chief executive Mark Hales told the Birmingham Post: “There is a lack of capacity for trained care workers. If we could get 100 trained workers by the end of the week, we would have space for them, but there just aren’t.

“We see taking on the Polish workers as another tool in the box to deal with the recruitment problems,” he added.
