‘Core jobless’ fight for work
29 August 2012
Prejudice still rife
Those with a criminal record, a history of drink or drug problems, or long-term sickness are being refused work by most companies, a CIPD survey has revealed.
The study of 750 employers found that 60% deliberately exclude candidates in those categories.
Charity NewLIFE specialises in helping the ‘core jobless’ find work by educating employers and coaching the unemployed.
“This can be an excellent way to address skills shortages. The main barrier employers face is the fear of the unknown,” said Kathryn Stewart, marketing and care developer at NewLIFE.
