Two new major energy projects should create 20,000 permanent and temporary jobs between them in the next few years.

The first project is electricity and gas market regulator Ofgem's, £22bn upgrade and renewal of Britain’s gas and high voltage electricity network, which will see 7,000 new jobs created, mainly in the construction supply chain. The second comes after the National Grid awarded a contract and a connection of 3,000 megawatts to Irish renewable energy exporter Element Power, which will see wind power generated in the Midlands region of Ireland supplied to UK consumers.

The £7bn project should be operational by 2018, and will create an estimated 10,000 development and construction phase jobs, and 3,000 “long-term operational and manufacturing jobs” in both the UK and Ireland, including in two “connection points” for the power transmission in the West of Wales.
