The chief executive of international industrial conglomerate General Electric (GE), Jeff Immelt, says the world is experiencing “a new zeitgeist” in the form of a global manufacturing renaissance.
In comments reported in the Financial Times, Immelt says GE is likely to have “a lot more” plants in a decade’s time.Immelt’s comments come as a new report by IHS Global Insight, a US consultancy, reveals that this year, global manufacturing as a percentage of total world output is set to reach 17.7%, its highest level for more than a decade.
Much of the manufacturing renaissance is due to take place in China and the US.
UK industrial production figures due to be released tomorrow are expected to show a rise of 0.2% in April following a 0.3% fall in March.
