US temporary and contract employment was 4.5% higher in March than in March 2011, according to the ASA (American Staffing Association) Staffing Index. The index value for March was 89, up two points from the 87 reported for February.
Typically, staffing employment peaks between mid-November and mid-December each year, after which it dramatically declines for several weeks before turning upward in mid-January. According to the index, since the beginning of 2012 temporary and contract employment has grown 18.3%.Last week, official figures indicated that the US economy added 120,000 jobs during March, a figure that was lower than expected. Analysts had predicted a fourth straight month with job growth of more than 200,000. Employment has been rising for the past six months but the jobless rate, now at 8.2%, has been stuck above 8% since early 2009.
