Employers in the resource-rich states of Queensland and Western Australia are Australia’s the most confident on hiring in the next quarter, shows a new report from recruiter Hudson Global Resources.
While all regions reported an overall positive employer sentiment towards hiring in the next quarter, these ranged widely from 6.7% in Victoria and 11.7% in Australian Capital Territory (ACT), to 43.9% in Western Australia, a slight drop on the previous month, and 37.6% in Victoria, up from 35.4% in the previous quarter.
The resources industry remains the sector with the highest hiring intentions, with IT the second most confident, and professional services the third, with advertising, marketing & media showing a huge jump from 6% last quarter, to 27.3% now.
Hudson’s Asia Pacific region chief executive Mark Steyn says: “Australia’s two-speed economy is apparent from the report findings, with the resource boom states of Western Australia and Queensland recording the highest employment expectations and businesses linked to the development of infrastructure to service the sector also reflecting positive hiring intentions.
“With the continued growth of the resources industry have come the associated threats of skill shortages and rising wage expectations, highlighting the importance of making the right recruitment choices, even in strongly performing industries. ”
