Unemployment rates in December 2011 were lower in 329 out of 372 US metropolitan areas than in the same month in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics.

Ten areas saw unemployment over 15%, with El Centro, CA and Yuma, AZ leading the way at 26.8% and 23.1% respectively, and 24 had unemployment below 5%, with Bismarck, ND the lowest of the lot at 3.2%.Steubenville-Weirton, OH/WV saw a drop of 2.8 percentage points in its unemployment rate and Redding, CA, a drop of 2.7 points.

The national unemployment rate in December stood at 8.3%.
