London Luton Airport is warning would-be candidates of a recruitment scam, where a £100 payment is requested to process their references following an application for a role as an airport security officer.

On its website, the airport states it has been made aware of fraudulent online recruitment advertisements purporting to offer positions as airport security officers.

The announcement advises jobseekers that security recruitment opportunities at the airport are always posted on the recruitment page of its official website, adding it does not charge applicants for pre-employment checks.

In a statement sent to Recruiter, a spokesperson said the airport had been contacted by a member of the public on 31 July, who wished to check the job he had been offered via an email from a Gmail account was legitimate. He had applied for a security officer job off the back of an ad he had seen on job search engine Indeed. The ad no longer appears on the site.

The statement added the candidate was advised the airport was not currently recruiting for security officers, that the email was not sent by the airport and that it does not request money for referencing.

“As a responsible employer, we have signposted the issue on our website which is the official source of all jobs for the Airport Authority,” the spokesperson added.

Recruiter understands Indeed operates with a search quality team that works 24/7 to prevent any internet-related fraud, conducting quality assurance rounds and removing these types of posts from its site.

Last week, Starwood Hotels & Resorts confirmed it had been the subject of a recruitment scam in which international candidates were asked to pay for work permits enabling them to work at one of its UK locations.
