We appear to have reached a dangerous time in the economic cycle. The world economy was heading for a recession and the financial fall-out from the events of 11 September seems to have clinched it. We do not as yet know whether this recession will be short and sharp and over in a few months or deep and long, perhaps becoming a depression.
