Lawrence Christensen has been with Safeway since the Argyll Group bought it in 1987 and had been expected to take a seat on the Morrisons board.

Sir Ken Morrison, owner of Morrisons, had hoped to retain Christensen and Jack Sinclair, Safeway's marketing and trading director, for his board once the merger becomes effective, which is likely to be next month.
