Few purchasers in the US have yet signed up to 'social ethical responsibility', but it was the hottest topic at the Institute for Supply Management's annual conference in Philadelphia this year. Andrew Golder gauges their reaction

It is perhaps symbolic that the place where one of the world's biggest democracies was founded should have picked up on the new spirit of social responsibility. And it's a big topic, with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) - the US equivalent of CIPS - appealing for its 45,000 members to take the lead at its annual conference in Philadelphia last month.
