The Freedom of Information Act could halt a string of costly IT disasters in the public sector by making it harder to shield contracts behind ‘commercial confidentiality’, says Paul Abbiati

The IT press recently reported that the £319 million private finance initiative (PFI)-funded Libra computer system for the magistrates’ courts is likely to be scrapped. At the same time, it emerged that the Freedom of Information Act, being phased in between now and 2005, will open public-sector IT contracts to outside scrutiny.
