A team has been set up to identify procurement best practice and promote a collaborative approach to purchasing among police forces in England and Wales. Emma Clarke reports

Efficiency is currently the buzzword in the police service. Home secretary Charles Clarke is considering merging smaller police forces in England and Wales and the Gershon review has challenged the service to produce a 3 per cent efficiency improvement on its £2 billion annual spend.
