Flexible friend or foe?

Many businesses rely on running a lean machine. But a new, more flexible and customer-friendly approach is starting to challenge the accepted wisdom, says Mark Whitehead

Ever since the downsizing and delayering 1980s, the lean and hungry look has been the ideal among companies as they strive, as if emulating the supermodels who emerged onto the catwalks at that time, to slim down to the absolute essentials. But, as a new millennium begins, a fresh idea is taking root.
