The NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (NHS PASA) claims it spends £500m on agency staff every year.

As the health service is the UK’s largest single employer, this figure is hardly a surprise. But it exposes the reality that many hospitals and health organisations face. They are run with public money but rely on private, profit-driven agencies to survive.
