Survey shows service sector upturn

Profitability in the service sector rose at the fastest rate for almost three years in the last quarter of 2003, according to a survey by Grant Thornton and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

The survey found that 43 per cent of professional service firms, which includes legal and accountancy firms, experienced an increase in trade at the end of last year.

Business also increased at the fastest rate for more than five years in consumer service firms such as hotels and restaurants. Forecasters expect volumes across the service sector to increase...
