SMEs reluctant to offer flexible working hours

Small and medium-sized companies are reluctant to adopt flexible working because they find it hard to trust staff working from home, a study has found.

A third of the 418 managers surveyed by telecoms company Inter-Tel last month said they did not offer it because it does not fit their “business models”, and 17 per cent did not because they could not monitor staff.

Nearly a third more small and medium-sized businesses are allowing staff to use flexible practices, compared with last year.
