Smith was previously at consultancy Shreeveport, where for three years he led the procurement and outsourcing practice.

"I will continue to do some work with Shreeveport," he said.

"My consultancy work will look at how leading-edge procurement theories can be used by top-level purchasing people to add to their company or organisation's bottom line."
