DTI scheme gives peace of mind on ‘green’ energy

Buyers can use a new certification scheme to ensure their electricity comes from renewable sources and is not subject to the climate change levy. However, supply problems continue to dog the sector.

The scheme, launched by the Department of Trade and Industry, covers producers of “green energy” ranging from the smallest domestic generators to large hydro-electric power stations.

Ian Dobson, chairman of the CIPS energy committee, welcomed the scheme. “Many buyers have a policy of purchasing green power, but they are never sure of its origin,” he said.
