Bug fears halt group’s trading_3

Agricultural group Cargill will not deal with South Africa between mid-December and mid-January because of possible millennium bug problems. In a “worst-case” scenario, South Africa’s transport systems and government services could suffer up to 80 per cent disruption during this time, according to US consultancy GartnerGroup. A spokesperson for the National Year 2000 Decision Support Centre said Cargill’s move was an “over-reaction”. But Cargill says these months are traditionally a quiet trading period for the company.
