Mon, 17 Jun 2013The May 2013 Talent Spotlight from professional recruiters Badenoch & Clark shows two patches of particularly fertile ground for non-permanent hiring for City recruiters.
The legal and accounting & finance sectors are stand-out performers which have seen substantial growth in contract vacancies, according to the study, which is based on market intelligence from major job boards and social networks, other Adecco Group brands, and market intelligence firm Innovantage.
Legal contract vacancies rose by 11.7% over the month, an increase of 53.2% since May 2012. A major hot spot was litigation, up 98.1% in May and 228.7% over the year, while family law roles saw a rise of 24.7% monthly and 51.8% annually.
Guy Emmerson, operations director for legal at Badenoch & Clark, notes “an increase” in the use of locums “across the East and West Midlands, owing to an increase in workloads ― particularly in the property sector”.
Permanent demand rose 10.6% on the month, but was still 9.1% lower than May 2012 – although Emmerson says the firm is “expecting a steady increase in permanent hiring for the remainder of 2013, as this market remains stable”.
Demand for contractors across accounting & finance was up 14% in the month, which represents a 33.3% year-on-year demand. Two strong areas were roles for auditors, up 26.8% on the month and almost exactly twice that rate versus 12 months ago, while reporting roles were up 24.9% over the past 31 days, and 36.2% over the past 365.
Permanent demand in the sector rose by a healthy 9.6% month-on-month, but remained 3.1% lower than the same month in the previous year.
However, Peter Howarth, Emmerson’s counterpart for accounting & finance at the firm, notes: “Many firms are opting to hire new recruits on a temp to perm basis for the initial flexibility it offers, before committing to permanent personnel as some markets improve and businesses gain greater stability.”
