Personal career management: CVs not good enough

Most CVs are not good enough to be taken forward any further, according to a study by career coaching company Personal Career Management.

The study found that 94% of CVs reviewed were not good enough to be carried forward to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Of the 450 CVs studied, 81% had spelling or grammar errors, while 13% were poorly displayed or used irrelevant, clumsy language.

Julian Acquari, managing director, Monster UK and Ireland, says: “In the current economic climate it is vital that people searching for jobs do not sabotage their chances and fall at the first hurdle by submitting CVs with mistakes.

“Spelling and grammar errors or typographical errors do not convey a conscientious work ethic, and many employers only need to see one mistake to send your CV straight to the recycling bin. Your CV is a potential employer’s first introduction to you, so it’s vital that it makes a good impression.”

  • I think this depends on the role being recruited for. The standard varies. I might view a PA's CV more harshly than a labourer.

Our service to our candidates is to present them in the most positive light.

Mr Acquari would do well to remember that he deals in the raw material and the recruiters provide the finished product.

Typical useless survey – 450 sample out of how many on monster! For what roles?

I think Mr Acquari should stick to selling advertising. I doubt he'll ever recruit the numbers of individuals that the average consultant places in a year. I'm certain he doesn't recruit without help, and I'm certain that no-one sees a CV on Monster and then calls the individual with an offer.

I'm sure he won't like my syntax, grammar or sentence construction but then that's OK – I prefer Jobsite!
