South Korea’s labour force and its unemployment rate continue to increase, figures from the Korea Labor Institute show.

The number of working-age people in the country stood at just over 27m in August this year, a 1.1% increase year-on-year. At the same time, 923,000 people were unemployed, a 3.7% increase year-on-year.

Compared to the same month last year, industries that added jobs this August include: manufacturing (156,000, or 3.6%); electricity, transportation, telecommunications and finance (65,000, or 2.2%); and business, personal, and public services (110,000, or 1.2%).

Industries where jobs are decreasing include agriculture, forestry and fishing (−114,000, or −7.7%).
