Barclays will turn to “a number of” search firms to find its next chief executive following Antony Jenkins’ departure from the role.

This morning the bank revealed in a statement that Jenkins, who had been CEO since 2012, has stepped down. Chairman John McFarlane has been appointed executive chairman until Jenkins’ successor is found.

While the statement added Jenkins’ departure does not signal any major change in strategy for the bank, deputy chairman Sir Michael Rake said “a new set of skills” would be required for the period ahead.

A Barclays spokesperson told Recruiter a number of search firms would be used to find the bank’s new CEO but would not reveal which ones.

Expanding on the sorts of skills Barclays will require from Jenkins’ replacement, the spokesperson added: “There will be the broad skill set that you would expect commensurate with the chief executive of an international bank.

“The sort of skills for chief execs of banks are leadership, commitment to strategy, all that kind of stuff.”
