Disabilities recruiter in court to face fraud charges

Stephen Dering, CEO of Dering Employment Services, which was based in Croydon until it went out of business in September 2010, stands accused of conspiring with six other people to defraud the DWP by falsely claiming more than £200k for using sign language services.

Croydon Magistrates’ Court was told the offences related to the government’s Access to Work scheme, which helps people with disabilities to find employment, stay in work or start a business. It was reported that £1m of Access to Work grants were paid through Dering’s companies and the prosecution alleged that more than £200k of these claims were fraudulent.

Dering is charged with two counts of conspiracy to defraud by making false claims between 1 August 2009 and 30 September 2010.
